Dr. Charles O. Dillard
Founder of the Community Resource Fund
Dr. Charles O. Dillard followed a close parallel to his father over the course of his life: serving in the military, joining him in the medical field, choosing to practice in underserved communities in Cincinnati, and both practicing for just about 50 years. In his 50 years of practice, Dr. Dillard continually helped the underserved and disadvantaged communities and even now, after retirement, he persists in helping these communities through the activities of the Community Resource Fund (CRF).
Through the CRF, Dr. Dillard supplies fruit and other nutritional items to youth and their families. He distributes these items to schools, the Boys and Girls Club, churches, and various food pantries within the community. In addition to food, when funds are available, the Community Resource Fund also distributes personal hygiene and essential items as well as outerwear.
The Mission of the Community Resource Fund, ties into his work with the military organization, “Mission Readiness” whose aim is to provide food and lobby politicians to put more money in early childhood education and nutrition.”
Dr. Dillard is a graduate of Fisk University and Meharry Medical College, a historically black medical school in Nashville, Tennessee. After serving in the army as a military doctor, and completing his residency in Detroit, he returned to practice medicine in Cincinnati.
In the late 1970s, Dr. Dillard re-joined the military serving in the Ohio National Guard. He became the first African American medical officer to attain the rank of Brigadier General in the Ohio National Guard. He has also served as a medical missionary, providing healthcare in 15 different countries. He continues to actively volunteer, including with the Cincinnati Federation of Colored Women’s Club and A Few Good Men. After retiring from active practice, Dr. Dillard continues to serve as a staff physician for the MRDD center in Batavia, Ohio as well as functioning as a Medical Director for a private community-based health care organization.
“In medicine, I’ve always advocated that healthcare should be a right, not a privilege,” unfortunately, to those without the means, it is often rationed”. Dr. Dillard continues his mission of service to those with the most need.
